Michael Smith, MD

  • I grew up on the East Coast, specifically New Jersey and New York. I attended NYC Public School through high school and then went on to graduate from Lehigh University in Bethlehem Pennsylvania, in Chemistry and Libertal Arts in 1964. Subsequently I attended medical school at New York University, graduating in 1968.
  • At that time my life shifted radically as I came to California to undergo training in Internal Medicine at StanfordUniversity Hospital and California has been my home for the past forty years (except for my time in the USAF).  It took me awhile to find my place in medicine, but after seven years in Emergency Medicine at Herrick Hospital, I finally settled into Family Practice. I am Board Certified in Family Practice and have been recertified six times since 1977.
  • I am married and the father of two daughters who have been among my greatest teachers and continue to bring joy and challenges into my life.
  • We started the original office in Berkeley in 1979 and then moved to Albany in 1985 to the location we are in now. It has always been a pleasure to have a community-based practice that offers a broad range of services. Although I am thoroughly experienced in conventional (allopathic) medicine, over the years I have received training in other disciplines that have broadened my ability to meet the challenge being a physician to my patients in these times.
  • I completed the training course for physicians in Medical Acupuncture in 1997 at UCLA School of Medicine. I have an especial interest in Neuroendocrine Immunology, Metabolish and Nutrition as they apply to everyday life and the quest to maintain and optimize Health or to re-establish it. I use various injection techniques to deal effectively with pain, among which are Prolotherapy and Biopuncture. In addition, I have spent the last eight years in training for Osteopathy in the Cranial Field (also known as Cranial Sacral therapy).
  • All of the aforementioned are used in my practice for my patients as their particular needs arise. At times I will consult with my partners about their patients about what skills I can use to help them as well.
  • The challenge and joy for me of my honored profession is that the learning never ceases and our personal evolution has no horizon.
  • I am a member of Brown & Toland/Alta Bates Medical Group, and take most medical insurances.
